Happiness – it’s Now or Never. The ebook I wrote at the airport. Hope it takes off!

I am now pretty happy…. Just before leaving for far-away (well 8 hours by car) Gisborne to join Raewyn at our daughter Anna’s place and await her first baby and our first grandchild, I was stressed and not sure I could cope.  But I saw a book lying round and dipped into it. The next morning I read a bit more of it, and had an epiphany.

The book is ‘Happy for No Reason‘ by Marci Shimoff. The epiphany – well read this free ebook I wrote about it while waiting overnight on standby at Auckland International airport. I had three coffees and didn’t sleep a wink, but I wrote a book! That felt good. See it here: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/309807

Last night, safely arrived in Gisborne, I did the cover and uploaded the ebook to Smashwords.

Cover for 'Happiness - it's Now or Never'Tell me if it’s rubbish, but I at least have vowed to follow this one until I am able to practice the ‘happiness is here and now’ wisdom at all times. The irony is I’ve been holding up the ideal of Eutopia all these years but not practicing the first principle of Eutopia, which is that HERE is a ‘Eutopia’ or Good Place, and we only find happiness Now, and again Now… Then, happy, we can also work to improve the place yet more. But if in our minds it’s always  ‘jam tomorrow, jam yesterday but  never jam today’, we will NEVER have or dwell in Eutopia.

But do download and read the tract – it’s short and hopefully clear. If you like it, put a star rating on it and propel it to wider readership. That would make me very happy! 🙂

Three up, one to go – how to make an epic end

In between duties which I could not neglect (and some which I did), I’ve collected the graphics, edited the ebook bits, and uploaded three of the four volumes of the Apples of Aeden. Today the all-new illustrated (well, partially) volume 2, the Rebels of Aeden, went up on all known platforms via smashwords and kindle. This makes three colourful ebooks of the epic, the first of which is FREE at https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/243499 until the end of 2012 (coming up fast!). The others are $3.99, pretty good for quality ebooks such as these!

But what about IV – the capstone, the end of the line, the culmination of the Fourth Age and the Doorway to the Fifth?

I was at our land on Sunday mowing the neglected grass with raewyn and remembering the writing of the others, and of the final volume which nearly pushed me over the edge when I finally stopped at the end of draft one. I thought, ‘Must push through, fall over that finish line… then I can really say, I followed it through to the end.’ What if something happened and I never had the mental capacities to do the last edits? Someone, a stranger might be paid to do them, and guess at what I was going to say or correct or omit or add… eek! Or it would remain forever unfinished, unpolished… ugh!

So, how to fit in the important and hopefully non-urgent and treat it as if it might become urgent too late for me to action it? This is of course a recurring problem in any creative life – how to fit in the ‘BIG ROCKS’ into the only-too-full jar of life… the fact that according to the ancient Mayans a 20,000 – something-year cycle is possibly meant to end on the 21st of this month adds just a little to the gravity and timeliness of this question…

Here are the covers of all four – the Volume IV cover being there to spur me on to the magical ‘threshold’ of the finish line:

Before you rush off to download the Apples of Aeden for holiday reading:

What, friends who have followed this tortuous blog path through 2012, is your important but hopefully non-urgent BIG ROCK at this time? What little pebbles can you chuck out to fit the bog one in? What dregs of the past can you tip over the side?

Free entry to Aeden – again!?

FREE AGAIN!!?@#$%

The Girl and the Guardian

Cover for 'The Girl and the Guardian'

By Peter Harris
Rating: Not yet rated.
Published: Oct. 08, 2012
Words: 211462 (approximate)
Language: English
ISBN: 9781301983193

Short description

Shelley is lost in a World once known as Aeden. The ancient Tree of Life is dying, and deadly Thornmen are hunting her. Someone else has been waiting for Shelley. He asks to be her Guardian on a perilous quest to save Aeden. The Thornmen are closing in as the Girl and the Guardian seek the faery refuge of Urak Tara. In the terrible Valley of Thorns they make a daring – and fateful – pact…

Well,  it is a bit depressing for us authors, but the fact is, folk love digital free and hate even a low price, mostly I guess for the convenience of not having to muck about paying a small sum to a faceless internet machine.

So the recent 9 day Free offer for the Girl and the Guardian made a spike in my Smashwords download stats, tailing off a fair bit but plummeting to ZERO downloads the day it went back to 99 cents. 😦

But now brother John and I are agreed, we will release the Hounds of Free until 31st of December 2012, to sniff out the lost innocents who cannot find their way back into Aeden, and lead them penniless across the threshold into the Nine Worlds of the Apples of Aeden, where they will be enriched in spirit and (by the end of volume I) be thankful enough (and hooked enough) to go to the bother of paying for further adventures in II, III and IV (and V, the epilogue, when I write it).

So, it is done. You may now zap over to https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/243499 and download the full volume one complete with colour maps and lexicon, for Zero money. And if you like it or love it, do write a little review sentence or two and help others know Aeden is out there…

Enchanted gardens, Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, etc

Well the Mad hatters tea party

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

http://madhattersteapartykaipara.wordpress.com/2012/10/27/a-great-tea-party-with-jonathan-larsen-and-ron-manderson/ goes on, standing for TRUTH and FREEDOM  in between all the usual day to day stuff like finding a way to make a living in a mad world that doesn’t quite get wizards, philosophers or fantasy writers unless they are Tolkien or vampire creators.

The latest practical development is a return to making concrete stuff – ferrocement gardens and anything else the patron imagines.

I met Deborah, my co-creator in this venture (who is mad keen on ferrocement and gardens too) because I had the Wizard sign out. So in a way it has been of pragmatic use to ‘come out’ as a wizard! Especially since she has a magical little ferro cottage/bach at the back of her place, built by a man named Weston, in need of renovation and containing a built-in water tank which under my sledgehammer is now becoming a sort of grotto of the goddess (the Chrysalis Cave). In this cottage she will sell all my eutopian objects, as well as her own. Magic is indeed unfolding there, and i am sure it will live up to its name ‘Deb’s Enchanted Cottage’.

If you want anything of this nature, email me peter@eutopia.co.nz.

Looking forward to getting out of doors more, being fit, and having fun creating stuff people actually ordered, for a change!

Then when we have some funds, we can tackle the finishing of cafe Eutopia – naturally!

Mad Hatters Tea Party has begun

Well life has a way of happening while I’m making other plans. Yesterday the dismay at our MAD council’s 56% rates rise for cafe eutopia and the ark here (and lots of other homes and businesses in the kaipara) came to a head. When desperate, we sometimes come to the point where we just say NO! and then we try and work out how to do NO. or just begin it.

After four years of the ‘forever recession’, this was a bridge too far. I’ve gone ‘MAD’. I am starting the Mad Hatters Tea party in kaiwaka to protest the mad bureaucrats and their illegal and immoral shenanigans and passing on the fallout to us, the poorest (? i’m told) district in New Zealand, the bill in the biggest rates rise I’ve ever been subjected to in my long history of fiscal struggles.

So, in the name of TRUTH and FREEDOM, we are witholding rates until the 13 demands of the first ones to strike (in Mangawhai, a richer enclave of our district)  are met. The TRUTH must be found and told, and lies exposed. The FREEDOM to say no to corrupt and unjust representatives. This is one small part of the defense of the true west: to say no to corruption in our democracies.

And we are going to have some fun doing it!

I plan with friend Ian’s help to set up our 7 metre tent in front of the Ark, and paint on it

MAD HATTERS TEA PARTY HQ

Saying no to mad rates

[now done – 8:07 pm]

and folk can drop in for tea, and we will sell or give out top hats and read Hafiz and some other mad divine poets, and rejoice in life and the sanity of sunshine and rain and gardens and friendship, and mock at the grownup madness of the local tinpot bureaucrats who schemed and raked off and lied and… you know, the usual.

The price of Liberty and sanity is eternal vigilance.

There will be dancing in the streets of Kaiwaka before this is over.

[now added: the blog of the mad hatters tea party is now up: http://madhattersteapartykaipara.wordpress.com/ ]

Oh, and meanwhile, thanks to all you who have been to the smashwords site and downloaded my FREE ebook of volume one of my eutopian epic apples of aeden. pass the word on! It too is part of the return to sanity and the Balance.

A wizard revelation: BE one thing, then DO any thing you like

This morning was amazing. I woke up in the dark, as one does when worried. But this time it was different. I started to think, I have a ‘branding problem’ because I have too many strands (as shown by all my blogs), and not enough established ‘products to sell’. Then I thought, ‘Maybe I need to find some money and pay a branding consultant to tell me what the h@* to do with myself.’ Then I thought, ‘Maybe I know what to do with myself: be ME!?’ How would that look? Well, I would erase the complicated sign out the front of the ark which talked of secondhand books and other sidelines, (i already did erase it actually – that was the first step towards liberation. Is that a hot tip for jumpstarting your makeover? PAINT OUT YOUR SIGNS)

So, I thought, put in its place the sign

WIZARD OF EUTOPIA

Genius for hire

– or find your own genius

Or similar. And for the blogs – keep them all but add one called wizardofeutopia.com. Which funnily enough i already have. it is unused until today. and on that blog i will list my others, and offer all these facets for hire/sale/consultation.

SIMPLE!

How’s that, intrepid followers of wizardgifts? Find your chord, be it, resonate in every fibre with it, and let events unfold as they will – at least YOU will be ALIVE!

So, I hear the skeptics among you mutter (‘one of us does not believe, does not belong…  I will weed you out!’ as Hook said to his pirates!) – you ‘re saying, ‘That airy-fairy talk is all very well in lalaland where wizards hang out, but in the Real World, where I live, it just doesnt cut it.’ Or words to that effect. Well, SYNCHRONICITY: this very morning the phone went and it was an off-the-wall, unpremeditated offer for me to make something outrageously fun, for money, just down the road in Mangawhai. (but what is it? you cry. Well, i’ll tell: giant ferrocement rocks for children to play on in the new Mangawhai museum) .

I went for a walk in the little bush reserve here in kaiwaka, and sitting there in happy dreams i noted the kauri trees, and the birds, and poppy our doglet sitting beside me on the mossy seat, and i saw that they all have soemthing in common which we humans so often completely deprive ourselves of: THEY ARE ALL JUST BEING THEMSELVES. They eren’t trying to be anything different or ‘better’ to fit with expectations of their peers. They are all doing fine, as far as I could see. So, BE one thing – creative, or dynamic, or daring, or ox-like – but just BE that happily and the DO whatever comes – flows – naturally out of THAT. Simple really… Most normal successful folk do that i know. It’s people like me that have the most trouble, partly becaues of those other people, who put the wind up us and make us believe we have to be like THEM if we want to ‘make a crust’. Yet what comes without effort comes well, and pays well, if we only do it with conviction and energy for long enough. And if we meanwhile need a crust or two, hey, there’s always busking if we are a musician, or any number of crust-earning activities to get by on WHILE WE BE OUR ONE THING. So, close the door, paint over the sign thats not doing it for you, and walk away and BE YOU.

I am.

Here endeth the wizard’s sermon on the mount of kauris. Thanks for listening!

The wizard of New Zealand aka Wizard of Christchurch

I finally caught up with another wizard of not, [woops I mean of course NOTE] at his modest web abode here: http://www.wizard.gen.nz/

I didn’t know he was calling himself the wizard of New Zealand! I suppose this is a little more modest than wizard of Eutopia, come to think of it! One is a little country with a lot of sheep, and the other a borderless possibility for all places and times. No wonder some of (OK, more like all of) the fundamentalists hate the title – though they actually don’t get past the ‘wizard’ word.

It’s interesting to see some cosmological activities, and a tree of life and process philosophy mentioned. Is it tongue in cheek? See for yourself. I feel there is a lot of the (to me) decadent p[ost-modern in his approach to life the universe and everything, but we have yet to interact.

The site is entertaining at least. And he is a photogenic fellow.

Well dang it, my sister’s ebook ‘Where Lions Roar at Night’ may be going viral!

Yep, there IS gold in (some of) them there hills.

Rosie Boom my sister uploaded her Where Lions Roar at Night on Monday and made it FREE, to get herself out there for her whole series of the six – seven? – Barn Chronicles. Now it’s only Wednesday and already she has 382 downloads of the free book and 24 FIVE STAR reviews.

See her on Smashwordshttp://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/rosieboom

Dang, how’d she do it? Is it luck?? This ebook is only up on the (relatively small) Smashwords site, not even out to Apple and the others which Smashwords sends them to after checking. So, I asked her, Who and What and How??, and she said some of her friends from the Christian homeschooling groups, and email ‘loops’, she belongs to in New Zealand, had offered to email their contacts overseas, in Canada and the USA, where there are some pretty big ‘loops’ indeed… While we talked on the phone, seven more downloads…

So, I know Rosie pretty well, being her brother, and I reckon these are the only things that could account for her luck:

– She and husband Chris put in the years BEING what she talks about in the books – genuine Christian homeschooling happy family.

– She had a full social life with others of their ‘tribe’ – christian homeschoolers.

– Furthermore, she is a singer and the family did lots of concerts for christian audiences up and down NZ.

-Also she did a writing course, learned her craft, and kept it clear what genre she was in, not trying to be all things, or do what didn’t come naturally. She just told her story, in her words, simply. When you get a Barn Chronicle book, you know what you are getting. Rosie Boom and family. Simple, good.

– Also she is a speaker at homeschooling and christian writing conferences – more contact, more credibility. In short, she has become what Greg Habstritt calls a ‘Trusted Authority’. People buy from Trusted Authorities, take the time to read their books, do their courses, buy their products.

So, now there’s not much need for the ‘lucky strike’ hypothesis! She put in the groundwork, it is solid, and her tribe is proving that by going for her offering like bees to honey.

Find your tribe, says Seth Godin, and then i Guess, impress them that you’re the real McCoy, and of course they will want what you offer, if it is any good. If it is really good, then you get what Rosie is getting – solid uptake, massive endorsement in the first part of the tribe to hear of it (all five star reviews!) and then, like as not, word of mouth and email and twitter and blog, recommendations enough to make the thing go viral at least through that particular tribe. In Rosie’s case, the tribe is many thousands world-wide, so Watch this Hill! I will report as news unfolds…

Of course, I’m very proud of her and will try not to be jealous. Compared with her I’m isolated, not of a clearly defined or large Tribe, and not simply one thing, but a man cursed with many parts which tend to confuse the hell out of people… So, lessons for us all here.

But first, let’s get some stuff out there. If Rosie hadn’t put the book out as an ebook, this wouldn’t have happened, no matter how well-known she is here in little ol’ NZ with its 40 million sheep and 4 million humans.

Now, be in to win. Go to my new ebook conversion services: http://www.ebookuploader.com

and get YOUR book up on them there hills!
