Calling all wizards: It is NOT too late to defend the True West!

I still haven’t hung out my ‘shingle’ at the front of the Story Ark where I reside and create and plan unrandom acts of creativity, but something has come up, calling me to action.
My son Daniel sent me links to a certain noble but pessimistic thinker and prolific blogger, who has written a major paper critiquing what he calls  the  current Western secular ‘religion’ – ‘PC’ (political correctness). In that paper:
Thought Prison: the fundamental nature of Political Correctness
Bruce G Charlton
University of Buckingham Press, Buckingham, MK18 1EG, UK, 2011
ISBN: 798 0 9563953 45
which he posted here: he quite rightly attacks PC as being anti-rational and destructive of the West –  but he goes on to say its errors are intrinsic to Westernness itself. I strongly disagree! PC  is a sickness of the reason, a reason turned (irrationally) against itself. But to me the true foundation of the West – what makes it so strong in spite of all its parasites and viruses – is  acknowledgement of the transcendental reality of Truth – and Ethics. And dammit, Beauty. And yes, of course, Love.
But there were false steps in the course of its pursuit of Truth, and ugly ideas took root, bad arguments were believed,  that were undermining of this acknowledgement. Perverse philosophers did deviously use the tools of the reason to undermine reason. Scepticism and relativism did become entrenched, and became the dominant paradigm. And the social forces, still all too powerful in the universities and other bastions of intellectual culture, entrenched this scepticism and relativism. They became the fashion, no less! The Spirit of the Age.
We are at a time of tidal change where we are reaping the results of this undermining of Reason – but does this mean the tide cannot be turned? NO! Why? because it is not inevitable like the brute forces of physics. It is a tide of human minds all tuned to certain false ideas – ideas which were created by us and can be just as easily revised by us, or refuted. The human tide of ideas that could destroy the West is definitely flowing; but WE CAN turn it  back. We are part of it, and our ideas can spread, if they are worthy and carry the power of truth.
But I was about to quote Bruce Charlton’s paper, lest I be accused of misrepresenting him:
“By secularizing knowledge, by creating The University – by making philosophy autonomous of the Church (instead of having learning institutionally focused in monasteries) the West eventually made political correctness – which is now everywhere and inescapable.
And PC is the West’s Nemesis, because the West cannot decisively overturn PC without overturning that which made it The West.
The West cannot overcome PC without ceasing to be The West.
Yet, if this overturning of PC does not happen, then the West will itself be subverted by PC.
In other words, The West is built upon error: its strength is also its weakness; its power is also that which is self-destroying; even as The West built its great structures it was simultaneously gnawing at their foundations.
Here is the double-bind:
To be antiPC is to be anti-The West (always in tendency, albeit not by intention)
Yet at the same time, to be proPC is to be anti-The West (always in tendency, and also by intention)
And/ So/ But The West never was sustainable.
Looking back, The West was a blip on the graph of history – albeit a thousand year ‘blip’! –with a hundreds year long, gradual up-tick and the rapid decades long collapse looming ever-closer.
Just so soon as The West began to implement its assumptions towards completion (which is political correctness), just so soon The West began actively (as well as passively) to destroy itself.”
What? ‘The West cannot overcome PC without ceasing to be The West‘?  No! By BEING TRUE to our heritage of clear and fearless RATIONAL INQUIRY we can overcome the sickness, which is at root a sickness of ideas. Who said the arguments of relativism and physicalism are irrefutable? When were they truly proved? How could they have been, when they are inherently, logically, self-contradictory? ‘Dear me, what do they teach them in these schools?’ (Professor Kirk, Chronicles of Narnia).
‘How shall a man judge what to do in such times?’
‘As he ever has judged,’ said Aragorn. ‘Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among elves and Dwarves and another among men. It is a man’s part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his won house.’
So, calling all wizards in the tradition of Gandalf the Grey: become what you are, servants of the True West and ‘Numenor that was, and beyond to Elvenhome that is, and to that which is beyond Elvenhome and ever will be.’ (- Faramir, in the wonderful chapter ‘The Window on the West’ in The Two Towers.)
Cast off the grey rainments of doubt, throw down the Balrog of fear, and become what you are,  white riders of the True West!
Which all leads me to think, we need those Schools which teach the true foundations. If they can be founded physically, all to the good, but even if virtual – they are needed! My is, in intention at least,  such a place.
PS: I haven’t addressed a major, major issue in all this: the vexed question of whether we need a religious underpinning in order to be the True West, or be good – many would say we do, including Bruce Charlton, who is I gather a Christian. Or he would presumably say that the good things the West has enjoyed have come from its association with the tradition and beliefs of Christianity. I can’t agree. I think an acknowledgement of the transcendental Truth and Ethics and the Good, IS enough: all else falls into place if we honour these. We can benefit from open-minded study of any sacred texts, or any secular ones too, but the evidence for any one religion having the monopoly on the Truth does not seem at all convincing to me.  This doesn’t make me a relativist, of course: They take the irrational step of saying all religions and teachings are EQUAL – ie equally meaningless, at bottom – they say there is NO truth of the matter. I say all religions, like all scientific theories, are better or worse – more (or less!) valuable GUESSES at the truth of Life, the Universe, and Everything.
This doesn’t make me a sceptic, because although the complete theories are guesses, some truths ARE self-evident. The ones about logic and ethics. We cannot build a complete irrefutable theory of everything on these truths, I guess, but we can build a glorious and wise civilisation on them.
That possible civilisation is what I call the True West.

The School of Wisdom and Wizardry has a logo

Just had to share this image with you – it is on the school website of course – love you to visit! – at the

Eutopian School of Wisdom and Wizardry

Here’s the logo, which also shows the logic of the school: the Five Wisdoms of Process in the horizontal plane, and the Seven Wisdoms of Connection in the vertical. This logic, or model, is a picture of process, in ourselves, nature, society, and the Cosmos. No ‘prior beliefs’ or meatphysics are necessary to assess and to use the model – it is descriptive, not prescriptive. We may add lots of hypotheses about how things work in detail, about what entities and energies exist or do not; but this is peripheral to the clear understanding of process, which leads to  greater effectiveness and creativity in life – wisdom and wizardry.

The Long-Awaited School of Wisdom and Wizardry

As promised in the last post, I will now jot down what i have glimpsed so far of the ‘once and future’ school of the perennial wisdom.

I was walking in Albert park by the university while raewyn did her psychology seminar. It is a mythic place, with great trees and a fountain in the middle. And lots of potential wizards walking and talking in it and sitting on the grass. Poppy the doglet loves it too. (Note to self: make sure it isn’t highly ‘illegal’ to walk doglet in said park.) I was intending to read ebook on ebook publishing, on my phone (how cool is that? Smartphones are like libraries too). But the trees seemed to trigger the inner conversation about the school. That and the flashcards Rae was talking about for concept learning in autistic children. We are all autistic, sleepwalking through life, part or nearly all of the time. To awaken, we need to see our life (and all life) as a limited whole, like a tree, with a beginning a growth flourishing and fruiting, and a death.  So, i got that the school can be simple. it can be like what it teaches: that life is a tree. So the school and the curriculum is a sign of itself, displayed fractally as a tree of process. But wait, said my higher self, there’s more! I saw how the tree of life Staff, the vertical axis of all humans, made in the image of the tree of life, gives us the two remaining pieces, added to the Five Aspects of all process, of a simple Diagram of  Everything:

1 THE STAFF  The vertical axis, trunk of the Tree of Life,  rests in the Earth, the Immanent actual divine unfolding. The Universe. Gaia.

2-6 THE ‘TREE OF LIFE’ ROUND TABLE  (and Game, aka the Wheel of Wisdom). The five aspects of the unfolding entity (ourselves, societies, all life) grow from and within it, and are of course part of it. the roots go into the Earth (Love and receptivity), the branches form the beautiful framework (Beauty, novelty), the leaves diversify and articulate the potential of the tree (truth, logic and planning), the fruit (Freedom, action, output, fulfillment) is the output of the tree and its reproduction and defense against extinction; and finally the Fifth Element is the sum of all these four dynamic phases – the status quo, growing and thriving in balance.

7 The staff, at its ‘crown’, links the tree with the Sky, the infinite Continuum of Possibility, possibility space. And that itself is contained within the Absolute Infinite (Cantor’s phrase) of the Neccessary Reality, which is logical and ethical truth. (As Wittgenstein says in the Tractatus, ‘Logic is transcendental… Ethics is transcendental.)

The curriculum simply traces these seven aspects of Reality, and can be drawn as a simple diagram of a staff and a table of five sectors. Then each sector and level can be explored in depth, as suits the individual. The Red individual will focus on the Red phase, the Green on the Green, and so on. Thus there will be five main Houses in the school.

LOVE: Blue House.

BEAUTY: Green House.

TRUTH: Yellow House.

FREEDOM: Red House

THE BALANCE: Purple House.

The other two, EARTH and SKY, I see as serving a minority:

Earth for the true empaths/poets/intuitives of the immanent divine, Gaia, the Goddess.

Sky for the natural mystics, the visionaries and prophets.

But all these must know and experiance that we are ALL needed, the Tree of Life needs all seven. That is why the school is a Wisdom school – it is about the Balance, all present and in right order, so that it actually works as life is meant to work, unfolding powerfully and creatively, not at war with itself, but synergising at all times in a constant flow of creation, love and beauty.

If such a Tree is to be demonstrated at this time of threatening chaos and the downfall of the West, it will surely be a School. A tree that the birds of the air and can shelter in and build their nests and weather the storm. And carry the seeds to the four corners of the Earth. Perhaps then there will be a new vision of civilisation, and the True West may return – or emerge from the ashes of the false. We have never yet really seen a true Renaissance. As C.S.Lewis says in That Hideous Strength (Christian but respectful of much pagan wisdom too i feel, and well worth reading), all lands are ‘haunted’ by their true potential natures. In the case of Britain, he calls that haunting ‘Logres‘. It almost broke through at the time of Arthur and Camelot (in his story), and when it does break through in any land, then Spring will have come at last…

If you are moved by this vision of the school, contact me! or comment here. Or come to the Story Ark and see me. Also, see my epic which has a lot of the vision in it, including (as I see clearly now!) the model of the school. In the Apples of Aeden it is called the hidden faery refuge and school of Urak Tara. The ebook of Volume one, the Girl and the Guardian, is now only 99 cents at the Kindle store:

As to the How of it, at the WOW  gathering I had a great lesson from young Adam, who expounded the Why What Who When Where and How sequence. (and challenged me to state my Why and What there and then. It was Be a real wizard, know the wonders of it all and my own place in it,  and Teach others to be the wizards of their own lives…)

Note that the How comes last, and is not reachable at first. We have to go through the other stages first… I have got my Why and What, I think. And the Who in a way – ME! But there have to be others, of course! And I don’t know Who you are – yet.  As I say, if you want to go to this School, or help build it, or just follow it, help name it, donate books, whatever, do get in touch! For a start, subscribe to this blog. I will start another one for the School when I know what to call it… So meanwhile, this is where to come! (Now it is the 8th of May, and happily I have a name AND a logo.  And a website: Eutopian School of Wisdom and Wizardry

here is the logo:

and my PJH ‘stamp’ for good measure

The dog without a bone and the School of Wisdom and Wizardry

One never knows, in the life lived consciously in the Unfolding of the Tree of Life, what will unfold and bud next. Flashes, images, come out of the blue (for me that’s how it usually happens) and  you see or glimpse something so big yet familiar that you can’t help believing it, outrageous though it might seem in more common hours.

That, I think, is when the inner or higher self is getting a word in, and we are remembering what we came here for. Scary but nice, because it feels right, almost like coming home and finding that you are expected, after thinking one is a beggar and a vagabond in this life, ‘like a dog without a bone’ as the Doors say. But try explaining this to your lower self who has to pay the power bill!

So, to illustrate: at the Wow gathering and several times afterwards, in spite of the fog of pain caused by bad tooth karma (sugar has its price – you pay long-term more and more, and in the end perhaps with your life), I got that the ‘One Thing’ that I came into this life for was to explore and articulate the perennial wisdom of life, and in word artefact and deed,  communicate it to others. To teach them how to be the true ‘wizards’ of their lives, find their ‘Staff’, the vertical axis, the Centre around which all the seeming magic can unfold, of meaningful action and creation in the world.

I have done a lot of the exploration (5 years of ‘official’ philosophy plus a lifetime of thinking and experiencing). I have also got a bit of the ‘artefact’ aspect done, with eutopia and carvings and medallions, and more recently the tree of life table and staff – or nearly done.

But I have sadly neglected the core things – the word and interpersonal deed.

Several times the vision of a school of some sort has emerged like a ruin in reverse from the unconscious where I apparently buried it for safekeeping. This time I am listening. Losing three teeth and being 57 can get your attention. They (C.S.Lewis and other theists) say that pain is God’s megaphone. I am now listening.

I will post again, this time about the vision I have seen of the School of Wisdom and wizardry (working title). Meanwhile, watch this space. More importantly, watch your own inner space, for omens and whisperings, visions of a ruin in reverse, rising out of the clutter of your common hours, the piles of bills, the mortgages and the credit card demands, and the endless ‘duties’ that conveniently distract you. What did you come here for? ‘Here’ being this body, this time and space, this theatre, this play. What is your script and part in the play? Clear away those bills and you might just find it. I dare you! (Speaking to myself of course.)

Like drawing teeth… but wizards can’t afford addictions, dammit!

I’m writing this as the injections wear off after a big tooth extracted from my head, the third in only a few weeks. It puts you in a sober frame of mind, losing parts… Last post I was going to the WOW! gathering to discuss with others the wisdoms we have, might have and should have as we go on into 2012 and beyond. I guess the biggest thing that happened for me there was to be asked what am i doing here (on planet Earth)? Like,

‘Peter Harris aka Wizard of Eutopia, i guess…’

‘You guess?’

‘OK, i want to be a real wizard and show the way, teach others to be wizards, maybe start a wizard school (or school of philosophy or wisdom school)…’

‘Ok, I’ll go away and think about it, I guess.’

Do or do not.’

That is the inner conversation, paraphrased, which happened as the WOW ended, and partly outer, as i discussed with a young, spiritually wired (in a good way!) man from the Chek Republic. Name of Adam…

I went away, continued to think, and the third tooth continued to throb, worse and worse until dentist said it had to go. Meanwhile i had read about the western diet and teeth and decided to put myself on a ‘wizard diet’ – my own take on the best pre-modern diet – no caffeine for a start. !@#%^$??  The tooth pain made the withdrawal from caffeine almost painless, somehow, and i also went off bread. The ‘Paleolithic diet’ is the general idea. Eating what we evolved eating, cutting out the processed pure white and deadly things… We really are surrounded by our addictions and follies, and the cost of having them. Ouch, ouch ouch. The injections have totally worn off and the whole cheek and jaw feels like it had been jabbed about four times, cut open, a tooth ripped out, and then sewn up again. Which is about what did happen… Reality can bite hard! What I hate is how addictions – personal and national – can feel Ok, feel OK, and then wham, they’re NOT OK. Like the addiction to debt. Or sugar. Karma, karma, all around.

Back to the ‘What am i here for?’ question. The way to kick an addiction i reckon is to answer that question fair and square, and act on your answer, by BEING it. When you really have a mission, a Mainspring, and an IDENTITY, it isnt so hard to make the sacrifices needed. But boy, the sacrifices do come up! The teeth synchronistically coming to a head at the same time as my vocational do-or-do-not crisis, the pain of them, is no accident. And when the pain clears? Will i go on and fulfill the vision? Watch this space…

Meanwhile, what is YOUR purpose in coming here? What addictions (personal or national) cushion you from actually being that? In the end, are they worth the cushioning they provided? (hint: they aren’t, if only because they become unsustainable just when you need them the most). Better just go be the Wizard… of YOUR life. 🙂 Take the blue pill. (or was it the red one?) See you on the other side 🙂

PS:  i am still carving the tree of Life staff, nearly done. And the Wheel of Wisdom likewise – getting there. Then there will be a symbolic basis for the school. Interested? Dare to be involved? Let me know.

The Wheel of Wisdom is born

Well after another round of thinking dreaming and asking, I came up with this name, and the blog has begun:

It is  intended to revolutionise the way we think, while having fun! And help us identify our natural working/living style, find and ‘unblock’ the ‘mainspring’ of our life, and find our own balance in life. The table version will be the central ‘tool’ for the school of philosophy, should that materialise!

Finding our Mainspring

Success – It’s all about energy and where we personally find it. I think…

This week I got my ‘conative profile’ done, thanks Jim Huse! ( – he does these and much more)

(‘Conation is at the heart of the Kolbe Concept. It is one of the three parts of the mind, equal in importance to cognition (thinking) and affect (personality). Defined as action derived from instinct, purposeful striving, or volition, the term has fallen out of common parlance partly because of modern psychology’s focus on these two other mental dimensions.’ – from the Kathy Kolbe Corp website:

Unsurprisingly i got a 9 out of ten for ‘Quickstart’ energy – i.e. in Lifetree system = Green zone – creativity, but only 2 for ‘Follow-through’ – the Lifetree Red zone.  I really ‘got’ that our home zone (mine is Green) is where we have the most energy, and the others we have to nurture and supplement in order to get them flowing too. According to the Lifetree system, life only flows when we have all four zones flowing freely.

So, if we have low ‘follow-through’ energy, we should do our follow-through (like, for me, editing, completion, selling work) in our highest-energy times of our working day, and not for long so we don’t get exhausted!

But i saw  that that is only a stopgap if we’re still trying to force ourselves to follow through on something that isn’t central to what our life is about – our ‘Mainspring’.

SO, if we lack energy in our work and it never seems to come to fruition, maybe the first thing to do is to go back to the original idea and motivation for doing it in the first place, and ask, ‘Is this a present part of the Mainspring of my life? Would I be upset at not having done this when i am on my deathbed?’

Being able to answer ‘Yes!’ to this is important even if we are working for an employer and getting regular pay-cheques; how much more vital it is when we are trying to run a business of our own, with all its burdens and need for immense follow-through energy before we see a single payday!

For the last few years i’ve been in this boat, as my energies felt all divided and dissipated, and besides that severely limited by age and the peculiar exhaustion which comes from nothing coming to a pay-day, as it were – ‘jam yesterday and jam tomorrow, but never jam today’, to quote Alice in Wonderland.

but I am seeing the light. I must urgently find my Mainspring i.e. ‘Life Purpose’ (I pretty well have, luckily!) and then DO that, make that number one and keep it number one, in the real Red Zone of follow-through, until some pay-days start coming.

Or not. If not, I will have given it a go, and will have valuable experience and insights about what doesn’t work.

What is the Wizard of Eutopia’s mainspring? I think it is:

To articulate and help actualise Eutopia –

To articulate the dream of the possible Human and the possible Civilisation through my writing and arts;

– To perfect the Lifetree tools so others can use them to defragment their own mind, find the mainspring of their own life and act on it, and thus help create Eutopias and reverse the decline of the True West which, however imperfect, is a manifestation of  Beauty, Truth and Freedom – and sometimes even of Love.

What is your Mainspring?

“We’re off to be the Wizard”

I read this phrase in a wonderfully fun and inspiring book called “I Had it all the Time!” by – I’d tell you if i hadn’t lent the book to a new friend who appeared synchronously at the door of the Lifetree Lounge this week. Both the new friend and the author live in Hawaii, and the book appeared in Raewyn’s handbag the day Brent turned up.

One of the main things a wizard must do is practice creating ‘thin places’, as the Celts apparently called them, sacred spaces where there is an agreement to allow the other side, or the level of faery, or the divine, to speak to us and help us become the wizards of our own lives (see my free poster  ‘How to be a Wizard’ on this blog) and so be radiate magic in spontaneous waves around us .

Our current ‘thin place’ is the New Leaf hall, now AKA the Lifetree hall, which was the local church since WWII and then a surfboard workshop, and was  finally tendered off to eutopians peter and raewyn harris. We tried to sell it and the ark for 18 months, and finally accepted there WAS a work to be done here – the Dream was not to die a natural death due to mere lack of money. Some wonderful synchronous meetings have occurred here already, and in this space i am finishing carving the Lifetree game, the round tree-table at which the fivefold process of creation and growth is enacted by the players, using marbles, domes, cards and wands. All problems of life are ‘treetable’ here! 🙂 sorry, i’ll leaf off the puns right now.

So, what is your thin place, and what do you feel the call to create within it? Remember it begins, according to my best knowledge, with BEING. Then that leads to magically charged DOING, and that finally to HAVING the results. How often do we get that order messed up in a lifetime? – and end up needing reminder after reminder from the other side, or our higher Self, or our guardian angel, or wherever you think reminders of that sort come from?

Perhaps the reminders come most often through words spoken through other fallible humans. But they occur to us as the living word of God as it were. I’ll tell you my current reminder. Try this:

What is the one thing that, if you were shuffling off this mortal coil, you would say ‘oh no, i didn’t ever do it!’ Go now, and begin it!

For me it was to teach what i have been learning. To teach the philosophy i have come to know can defragment the divided mind and make it whole and balanced, creative and powerful, as befits those creatures who walk upright between heaven and earth and can join the two, we who can guess at and solve the riddles of ‘Life, the Universe, and Everything‘, and rejoice in the wonder of it all.

The Lifetree Lounge

The Tree of Life game is developing again – on a bigger table – and i plan to host philosophy/game workshops in the hall, or ‘lounge’ as i am calling it now – more homely…

I am looking for the best names. The hall is now the Lifetree Lounge. at present iv’e got a sign stencilled:

but nothing’s written in stone!

i want to teach creative thinking, what Whitehead called ‘Adventures of ideas’,  interactively using the Game,  so people – friends, couples, enterprises, groups – experience ‘being’ Love, Beauty, Truth and Freedom by playing the game together. The aim is not to teach metaphysical doctrines, but a graphic model and tool for understanding any process, including  one’s own mind… (this understanding is never complete – Godel proved it’s impossible for any system to know itself completely – but it’s so worth going on the journey of self-awareness).
Lifetree is a method for ‘defragmenting’ the mind and uncovering its rules and presuppositions so as to be able to move forward/grow with new clarity, and to find what we are most naturally passionate about – our life purpose.

Interested? Come along and play the game – there is a rule booklet and also i would play it with you and guide you through the Tree of Life ‘labyrinth’.

i need guineapigs, ‘early adopters’ and beta testers….

School of Philosophy at the Ark – doors are open now

On the 2nd of January, the suppressed dream leapt out of my subconscious and blossomed into a vision which once let out into the sunlight of conscious thought has

(a) given me a migraine (helped by my foolish imbibing of a small glass of bubbly) and (b) lodged itself near the top of my pencil-scrawled  list of priorities for 2012.

Is there anything (for a eutopian philosopher) more important than helping others like himself get their own thinking, and thereby their lives, unstuck? How else can we overcome the doubter, cynic and nihilist within, and be part of the renaissance and defence of the True West?

So, defying the unworthy doubter (and craven budgeter) within my own breast, I am taking the first small steps towards such a glorious outcome. I will start a new blog i think, purely for the School. I will write a manifesto there, and forthwith open the doors of the Ark and the New Leaf hall for symposia (aka ‘classes’) – possibly Saturdays, possibly whenever folk can come. Overnight accommodation available if needed. If this excites you – as it ought to! 🙂 – do get in touch and plan to at least join the blog, and preferably come to the Ark and do some life-changing philosophy with us.

Also I am going to try making a donation button. In CASE you feel unaccountably and irrationally (or rationally) moved to donate to the cause of the school of (eutopian) philosophy based on the ‘Tree of Life’ process diagram and the enlightened tradition of the Peripatetics, i am first making a button for wizardgifts and the new (New Leaf?) School of Philosophy…

here goes:

YAY! it worked!? Test this button now by donating and make cultural history! 🙂

Although we (the philosophical ‘we’) are self-funding in principle, as we begin this there are setup and spreading-the-word costs, and I want to make it easy for you to support us in this early stage.

Also I want to test it for readers as they make their own blogs and websites to promote and/or sell their works. As a sufferer from tech-angst myself I am doing what i can to get the know-how here on this site – and link to other helpful sites. the instructions i am following are here:
